5 Ways to Sharpen Your Online Marketing Skills Over the Holidays

With the holiday season in full swing, it’s difficult to wrap your head around online marketing or anything related to business – I know. But let’s not squander away idle time and use the few minutes you have to increase profits for your company!

1.    Learn the basics

Brush up on marketing terminology and what those words mean, for example: ‘search engine optimization,’ ‘return on investment,’ and ‘social engagement.’ You don’t have to earn a degree in marketing to fully comprehend the definition of these words because there are amazing blogs out there that explain these topics in 200 words or less!

2.   Assess your company’s performance this past year

This is not to say, spend hours putting together a huge analytical report of your company’s performance over the past 12 months, but rather a quickly assembled assessment for review. How many leads did your website generate this year? Did your search engine position change at all? In terms of social media, how many organic likes did you receive? How many organic followers? These are the types of questions you should consider so you can properly adjust your strategy for the upcoming year.

3.   Envision long term business goals

New Year’s resolution anyone? With 2014 just around the corner, now more than ever is a great time to think about future business goals. Because the purpose of online marketing is to attract new customers, take the time to really think about the message you want to communicate to new clients or how to find them. Another goal to think about is the percentage of growth you’d like to see in the future or the ROI (see #1) you want to get back from your marketing budget.

4.   Brew up new ideas for content

The power of original content is crucial in online marketing. I agree, it’s tough to generate fresh content – but it works. Spending a few days away from the office, your mind will be free from day-to-day work distractions. This is the perfect time to brew up some new ideas for content. What ideas in the past have not worked out so well for your company, and why? What has worked and how can you fine-tune that idea to gain more engagement?

5.   Evaluate the value of your online marketing partner

This is definitely one of the most important things to do. If you feel like your marketing expenditures aren’t meeting your expectations, it’s time to consider a new business partner. There are plenty of companies out there that can cater to your business goals, don’t feel imprisoned to stay with a company! It’s your money and company reputation on the line, you have to do what is best for you!

The magical thing about each of these ideas is that they take less than 10 minutes to complete. Sparing less than an hour of your time over the holidays, you have the capability to create a stronger future for your company! Set aside that cookie and turn off Netflix because 2014 looks promising!
